Soul

Zyan Robinson ‘26

In this piece, I wanted to portray the feeling of R&B music with the experimentation of a photography technique called long exposure. Using the long exposure, that melting and tranquilizing sensation from the genre of music is captured in this picture as the models, Mikayla Lanot and Joseph Floreal, sway their bodies, corresponding to the R&B music. I believe I have a close connection with music, as if I can feel the frequencies vibrate from my ears through my body, and I wanted to seize that idea in one of my works.

Dreams of a Starry Night

Peace.

Rackets of sound made in the day.

“The city moves on,” they say.

But at night…

In the starry night,

that fills the sky with light,

that makes the suns

foolish act of dawn

an art to be redrawn,

there is peace.

The moon is jealous

of the Sun's glory,

but when it’s time for a bedtime story,

the moon and the stars light up the sky.

The moon and the stars reflect upon the water.

The moon and the stars are a piece of art.

And finally,

finally,

As the children fall asleep,

as the city quiets down,

and as the sun prepares for dawn,

the moon and the stars are admired

one last time.

This poem was inspired by the famous “The Starry Night” by Vincent Van Gogh. I wanted to capture his perspective while painting it and also to capture what I feel about it.
